Save & Save As Commands and their Options

As the client PC is set-up to handle developing schedules it’s a good idea to customize these options to best suit the project manager / schedulers daily needs.

To Save a File click the File (Backstage) tab. Now select either the Save or Save As button.

The Save As dialog box will be displayed. With current file name displayed in the File name: window. Save as type: will display that which was defined in the Project Options Save process.


The File name can be overwritten by highlighting what is in the window currently and then overtyping the content.


The Save As type can be changed by clicking the down arrow at the right hand side of the window and selecting the required file format type.


Click the Save button or press the Enter key on your keyboard

When selected, this is a pull-down list of those formats that are available in Microsoft Project 2010.

Save projects - Project Options

Microsoft Project 2010 allows the Project manager / schedule a number of Save options to a better help them.

To navigate to these options Click on File, Options sand at the Project Options dialog box select the Save button...

Save Options - Save files in this foramt:

Save files in this format: pull-down list

By clicking the down arrow in the window will display the available project schedule file formats.

The default format is Project (*.mpp)

Other Save project Options

  • Default File location – using the Browse… button, this default file location can be updated.
  • Auto save every __?? Minutes. On checking this option Microsoft® Project 2010 will automatically save the active file being worked on at that time by default option radio button. The default time is set for every 10 minutes. Using the scroll arrows either increase or decrease the time needed to perform these saves.
  • In addition to saving of the active file it is also possible by clicking the Save all open projects radio button.
  • Prompt before saving – check with option to ensure that a message is displayed prior to the Save operation.

Save As - ODBC

ODBC definition – Open DataBase Connection (ODBC) is a standard that supports the of data between applications. Those databases that adhere to the ODBC standards allow other software to read the Microsoft(R) Project 2010 data.

By clicking on the ODBC button in the Save As dialog box will display the Select Data Source dialog box. With the File Data Source tab selected click on the New.... button by the DSD Name: window.

At the Create New Data Source dialog box select the Format from within the Name window and click on the Next> button.

At the Create New Data Source dialog box if the file is a new file, enter the file name in the window. Otherwise click on Browse to locate an existing file.

Click the Next> button.

At the next dialog box the file attributes will be displayed. Click the Finish button.

Microsoft(R) Project 2010 will now present a series of dialog boxes to enable the ODBC schedule data base to be created.
